ÁREA DE PROTEÇÃO AMBIENTAL ITAPIRACÓ

Description
The Itapiracó Environmental Protection Area is a State Conservation Unit for Sustainable Use located in São Luís, Maranhão, among urbanized areas of the Island of Upaon-Açu. Created by State Decree No. 15,618 on June 23, 1997, the APA has a legal reference area of approximately 322 hectares and protects important natural remnants associated with the Amazon and Coastal-Marine biomes. Even though it is situated in a densely urbanized region, the APA conserves fragments of Amazonian vegetation, native trees, regenerating areas, and four springs, playing an important role in protecting water resources, maintaining biodiversity, and improving the environmental quality of the capital. Surveys released by the Government of Maranhão record about 174 species of animals and 33 species of plants remaining from the Amazon rainforest within the unit. The unit also stands out for its possibilities for environmental education and direct contact with nature. The conservation area has nine ecological trails, primarily used for guided visits with students, universities, families, and other groups. During the trails, visitors can learn about native vegetation and observe birds, small animals, and other components of local biodiversity. Integrated with the APA is the Itapiracó Environmental Park, which includes spaces for socializing, leisure, and physical activities, including squares, walking paths, sports equipment, and recreational areas. Thus, Itapiracó constitutes an important space for the integration of environmental conservation, leisure, research, environmental education, and quality of life in São Luís.
