Description

APA das Lagunas e Florestas de Niterói was created by Municipal Law No. 1.157/1992 to protect and improve the environmental quality of natural systems, protect the fauna and flora of the localities it covers, and ensure appropriate urban development in the city. The APA's importance lies in the diversity of ecosystems protected within it, such as forests, restingas (coastal sandy-plain vegetation), mangroves, lagoons, rock outcrops, and coastal zones. It covers 65% of Niterói's territory and is the largest protected area in the municipality, encompassing the entire Região Oceânica and Região Leste and part of the Região Pendotiba. Today, it includes several protected areas, such as sections of Parque Natural Municipal de Niterói (PARNIT) and Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca (PESET), Reserva Ecológica Darcy Ribeiro, and Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Itaipu (RESEX), as well as Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs) and other environmentally restricted areas, confirming its importance for environmental conservation.
