Pico das Agulhas Negras
Pico das Agulhas Negras, at 2,791 m above sea level, is the highest point in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the third-highest point in the state of Minas Gerais, and the sixth-highest in Brazil. Although it lies in a tropical zone, the peak often records below-freezing temperatures in winter and, occasionally, snow in exceptionally wet years. It is located in the upper part of Parque Nacional de Itatiaia, in the massif of the same name, part of the Serra da Mantiqueira, between the Minas Gerais municipality of Bocaina de Minas and the Rio de Janeiro municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende. The Preto River, which is 222 km long and forms a natural border between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, has its source at Pico das Agulhas Negras. Inside the park, the oldest in Brazil, there are several other mountains over two thousand meters high. The trail to Pico das Agulhas Negras, along with the climb to its main summit, is highly sought after by mountaineers from all over Brazil and is an adventure that offers an incredible experience of contact with nature.
