Description

The trail from Saco do Céu to Praia do Bananal is part of the long-distance trail Volta da Ilha Grande and consists of two official sections from the Ilha Grande guide: T03 (Saco do Céu – Freguesia de Santana) and T04 (Freguesia de Santana – Bananal). This route is historically rich, as it passes through the site where the island began to be colonized, in addition to taking you through the beautiful Atlantic Forest vegetation of the region. You can do both sections or just one, enjoying both locations at a leisurely pace.

Tips

Hydration point: Japariz is the best place to buy water or have a snack. In Freguesia and Bananal Pequeno, the facilities are more limited. Be careful with the tide: at some points on Japariz Beach, high tide can narrow the walking space on the sand.

Route

The route alternates between flat stretches along the beach and steep ascents and descents through the forest. It is well marked and signposted, but can be muddy on rainy days. The route is divided into two main stages: Saco do Céu → Freguesia de Santana, covering 3.9 km, where you can enjoy the small and charming Praia do Funil right at the beginning of the trail. After that, you reach Japariz beach, one of the busiest spots along the way, with several restaurants facing the sea. Further along, you arrive at Freguesia de Santana, a beautiful historic site. The Church of Santana (1843) and a huge almond tree represent a point of peace and much history of the colonization of Ilha Grande. From Freguesia de Santana to Bananal, it is another 2.8 km. This section requires a bit more from your legs, crossing the hill that separates Freguesia from Enseada do Bananal with some ups and downs. Before reaching the final destination, you will pass through Bananal Pequeno, a deserted and very tranquil little beach. Bananal, the final destination, is a traditional caiçara community with very calm waters, famous for its scallop farms and excellent inns.
