Description

The trail to Pico do Papagaio, on Ilha Grande, corresponds to Section 13 of the Official Trails Guide (T13) starting from Vila do Abraão. With an elevation gain of nearly 1,000 meters, the peak stands at 982 meters and the trail passes through areas of Atlantic Forest, offering one of the most panoramic views of Ilha Grande, including Vila do Abraão, Palmas Cove, and on clear days, even the mainland.

Tips

The trail is about 5 to 6 km one way. On average, it takes 4 to 5 hours of hiking just to ascend. One of the most famous experiences is to hike up early in the morning (around 2:00 AM) to see the sunrise from the top. If you do this, headlamps are mandatory, and it is recommended to go with a guide or someone who knows the way. Note: Do not ascend if the weather is overcast or if heavy rain is forecasted. Besides the risk of lightning, you will be "inside the cloud" and will not see anything from the top, and it is risky to be at the summit - which is rocky and small.

Route

The trail begins in Vila do Abraão, taking the Estrada da Colônia, the same road that leads to Dois Rios. After walking for a few minutes, you will turn right onto the Pico do Papagaio Trail (T13). The trail starts narrow, with a steep and quite uneven ascent, and it will remain that way until you reach the top. Prepare your breath and your knees. The terrain is dirt, with many exposed roots and rocky sections. On humid days, the path becomes extremely slippery. The final stretch is the most technical part. You will need to use your hands to support yourself on rocks and roots to reach the summit - the "beak" of the parrot. The view from the top, on clear days, is stunning and beautiful. To the north, you can see the sheltered sea along the coast, where the Enseada das Estrelas is located. To the south, the open sea, where Dois Rios and the beautiful Jorge Grego Island are found. To the west lies Araçatiba, and also the view of Pico da Pedra d'Água, the highest point of Ilha Grande, at 1035 meters above sea level. To the east, you will find Vila do Abraão and Enseada das Palmas. It is possible to spot the Restinga da Marambaia in Rio de Janeiro or Pico do Frade in Angra dos Reis - if the day is clear with a bright sky.
