Description
The trail to Laguna Esmeralda is the most famous and sought-after hike in Ushuaia. It leads to a lagoon with an intense emerald green color, surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and forests, offering a classic scenery of Tierra del Fuego. The hike cuts through beautiful native valleys and forests. In autumn, the leaves take on intense shades of red and orange; in summer, they are completely green. The peat bogs are the most distinctive feature of the trail. Peat bogs are spongy soils formed by organic plant matter that retains a lot of water. Walking there means stepping on very wet and muddy areas. Along the way, the trail passes by streams and fallen trees caused by beavers, and it is common to see the complex dams they have built.
