Description

The Cânion das Bandeirinhas is one of the most impressive attractions of the Serra do Cipó, in Minas Gerais. The trail is about 11 km one way, and the destination makes up for the long hike. It rewards the effort with cinematic landscapes, crystal-clear pools, and rock formations that impress any visitor. The trail is located inside the Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó.

Tips

Access is through the Portaria Areias of the Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó, located about 3 km from the MG-010. This is the best-equipped headquarters in the Park, offering free parking, restrooms, and drinking fountains. The Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with entry allowed until 2 p.m. Entry is free and the visit is self-guided

Route

The hike starts from the Portaria Areias of the Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó. The trail is rated moderate because of its length, but easy considering that the route is almost entirely flat. Along the way you can go to the Cachoeira da Farofa via a fork in the trail, but you have to walk another 5 km to get there and return to the original trail. The trail is fully signposted and easy to navigate. Shortly before reaching the Cânion, you have to cross the Rio Mascates, with water usually knee-deep. Once at the Cânion, you have to walk over the rocks to reach the pool for a swim. The scenery along the route includes open grasslands, hills in the background, and streams with crystal-clear drinking water. Along the way, we pass places such as the Lagoa Comprida and the Ribeirão Mascate, which make for good breaks to rest and take in the view.
