Description

This section runs along the Araruama Lagoon, where some native species of fauna and flora can be found, such as the sand lizard, the beach butterfly, the white-headed cactus, and endemic orchids. However, the predominant species is the exotic Casuarina equisetifolia. The main attraction of this section is Morro do Caixão, a dense dune formation situated in the midst of the restinga, from where one can enjoy a 360º view of the surroundings.

Route

The hiking route is flat and easy to navigate, mostly over sand, with dunes and wetland areas. It starts at the Condomínio Villaggio Valtellina, running along the edge of the Laguna de Araruama until a quick out-and-back to the Morro do Caixão, then returns to the shore and continues to the dunes, ending at the Praia Lagunar do Caiçara. Although the route has little shade, there are stretches where you can walk with your feet in the shallow waters of the Laguna, which eases the heat.
