Description

The Cachoeira da Fumaça trail from below, in the Chapada Diamantina, is a challenging 3- to 4-day traverse, leaving from the Vale do Capão and heading toward Lençóis, passing the Palmital and Capivara waterfalls until reaching the base of the Fumaça. It requires good physical fitness, and the overnight stays are wild camping. It is a much more technical and wild hike than the trail from above, with sections of Atlantic Forest and old prospecting mines. It is one of the most beautiful traverses in the region and well worth it. The connection with nature on this hike is unique. The Cachoeira da Fumaça has a 380-meter drop, the tallest in Brazil. Because of the height of its drop, the water tends to evaporate before reaching the bottom, in a constant mist, which explains the name it was given: FUMAÇA (smoke).

Tips

All overnight stays are wild camping. So you need to carry all your gear, including cooking equipment, food, water, and clothes. Hiring a guide or a local trail guide is highly recommended because of the long hike and the possibility of getting lost if you don't know the region. Be in good physical shape. Experience with long hikes is recommended, both physical and mental. This trail should not be done during rainy periods (summer), due to the risk of flash floods and of even more slippery rocks, which increases the risk of accidents.

Route

The traverse starts in the Vale do Capão, at the Visitor Center run by the ACV-VC - Association of Visitor Guides of the Vale do Capão, where you register your trip. The first day involves the trail to the Cachoeira da Fumaça from above, one of the classics of the Chapada Diamantina, and involves 1 km of steep climbing. The effort is rewarded with a breathtaking view: the Vale do Capão, stretching out majestically with the imposing Morrão on the horizon. The bravest position themselves on the edge of a rock to admire the pool formed by the waterfall and capture the famous "smoke" formed by the mist of water evaporating in the middle of the drop in that classic photo. This trail was historically used to reach the mines, places with greater abundance of game, palm heart harvesting, and the growing of crops. With the arrival of tourism, it also came to be used by visitors to link Capão and Lençóis. The route passes through areas of well-preserved forest remnants, such as the valley of the Capivara River, with Atlantic Forest features, where trees such as the quaresmeira, the sapucaia, and the quina grow. During the hike you can also see ruins from the mining period, such as in the Serra do Veneno, a place heavily inhabited by prospectors in the past. The traverse passes two more beautiful waterfalls, the Capivara and the Palmital, and can be done with 2 or 3 overnight stays at wild campsites. The hike takes you up and down mountains and along long stretches of riverbed, that is, over rocks.
