Description
The trail traverses part of an important historical route, the Estrada Real da Serra da Calçada. Built in 1725, this path served as a land alternative to the Old Way of the Estrada Real, which connected Rio de Janeiro to Paraty by sea. The route started in Santa Cruz, crossed the Serra do Mar in Itaguaí, passed through São João Marcos, and headed towards the São Paulo towns of Bananal and Areias, meeting the Old Way in Cachoeira Paulista. Used until the 19th century, the road is also marked by having been traveled by Dom Pedro I after the Proclamation of Independence in 1822. Most of the trail of the Emperor's Lookout follows this historic route, where it is possible to experience part of the past by walking on the well-preserved cobblestone path. At the end of the route, hikers will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the back of Sepetiba Bay, part of the Restinga da Marambaia, the Serra do Mendanha, and further away, the Maciço da Pedra Branca.
