Description
The Environmental Protection Area is generally an extensive area with a certain degree of human occupation, endowed with abiotic, biotic, aesthetic, or cultural attributes that are especially important for the quality of life and well-being of human populations. Its basic objectives are to protect biological diversity, regulate the process of occupation, and ensure the sustainability of natural resource use. The Paytuna Environmental Protection Area is a Nature Conservation Unit (UC), created by State Law No. 6,426, on December 17, 2001. The conservation unit, which had its boundaries rectified by State Law No. 7,692, on January 3, 2013, covers an area of 582.51 km² (58,251 ha). The APA brings together a set of highly relevant attractions in terms of landscape and great natural beauty, featuring archaeological sites of ceramics, natural cavities, rocky areas from which one can enjoy a beautiful view of the natural lakes surrounding the area, in addition to the cerrado vegetation. The communities within the APA have a subsistence economy based on agro-extractive activities and livestock. Agriculture is of great importance to the communities, concentrated in small properties with low technological levels, with cassava being one of the most cultivated products. Extractivism is based on the extraction of buriti, açaí, and white straw. Fishing, characterized as artisanal, is for consumption and sale.
