Photo: Collection of the Paths of the Ararunas trail The Paths of the Ararunas is a long-distance trail (LDT) with a length of 110 km within the Caatinga biome. Located in the mountainous region of Paraíba, its route passes through the cities of Araruna, Riachão de Araruna, Cuité, and Dona Inês, with 5 Conservation Units offering various types of landscapes along its course. It was initially constructed around 2017 through expeditions among friends and is now part of the Brazilian Trail Network as its first LDT from the northeast registered in the network. The trail traverses well-preserved forests, mountains, valleys, canyons, and passes through villages and settlements with significant historical and cultural value.

Route

The trail crosses valleys, canyons, and mountains that reach 550 m in elevation, links well-preserved protected areas, passes through areas with waterfalls, natural plunge pools (ofurôs), and potholes, and goes through villages, hamlets, and quilombola communities, always with views of the neighboring state, Rio Grande do Norte. Along the route there are historic ruins, archaeological sites, and surprising large rock formations, such as the Pedra da Caveira, Pedra da Boca, Pedra do Chapéu, Pedra olho d'água dos Índios, and Pedra da Macambira, and canyons, such as the Serra Verde and Macapá canyons. For climbing enthusiasts, the Pedra da Boca area has some of the routes on the list of the 50 most classic climbing routes in Brazil, such as the Via Sacra and the Fissura da Têmpora.
