Pico do Cristal is the seventh-highest peak in Brazil, at 2,769.05 meters above sea level, according to the measurement taken by IBGE and the Instituto Militar de Engenharia through the Projeto Pontos Culminantes do Brasil, and revised by IBGE through a new mapping of the geoid of Brazilian territory in 2016.
It is located in the Serra do Caparaó, within Parque Nacional do Caparaó, in the municipality of Alto Caparaó, in the state of Minas Gerais. A measurement on Google Earth shows the Espírito Santo border just 930 meters east of Pico do Cristal, and Pico da Bandeira, the third-highest mountain in Brazil and the highest in the Southeast Region. The two peaks are visible from each other.
Pico do Cristal is the highest mountain located entirely within Minas Gerais, since the state's other highest peaks are on the border with Espírito Santo (Pico da Bandeira), São Paulo (Pedra da Mina), or Rio de Janeiro (Pico das Agulhas Negras).
For those starting from the Tronqueira campground, in Minas Gerais, Pico do Cristal is reached via the trail toward Pico da Bandeira, where, close to that peak, you head south to Pico do Calçado and then west to Cristal. For those taking the trail from the Casa Queimada side, you reach Pico do Cristal by climbing the trail to Pico da Bandeira and heading east before climbing Pico do Calçado. From its summit, you can see the imposing Pico da Bandeira, with its characteristic sheer drop on the Espírito Santo side and gentler slopes on the Minas Gerais side. The trail to the summit of Cristal, from either side, is a moderate hike that requires some physical fitness. Location of the Attraction
